Sound and Symbol in Chinese by Bernhard Karlgren, checked out from Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1946, found its way back to the shelves after a 65-year absence. It was returned by John J. Wolfe of St. Louis who located the book in his private library. Wolfe, a soldier recuperating from surgery at Fort Meade in 1946 after World War II, visited the library and "thought it [the book] might be useful." Library officials report that Sound and Symbol in Chinese is in pristine condition and has the original due date card in the back.
