Little Leapers 3.5 Launches in Maryland
Kelechi Nwafor (above) and his mother Chioma Nwafor and Chloe Warwick (right, with her father Mark Warwick) get absorbed in two of Harford County (Md.) Public Library’s (HCPL) iPad minis at the recent launch of the library system’s Little Leapers 3.5 program. The $24,000 initiative—funded by the Morris A. Mechanic Foundation, the library foundation, and library expenditures—makes 34 iPad minis with up to 30 preschool apps available to families with children ages 3–5, to demonstrate swipe technology as part of early literacy training. The tablets add high-tech to Little Leapers’ year-old offering of 100 STREAM (science, technology, reading, engineering, art, and math) kits. “As digital resources continue to grow, it is essential that every child has access to mobile technology and develop ‘technology-handling’ skills,” says HCPL Director Mary Hastler.
