Below is an abbreviated list of ALA grants that provide funding assistance to librarians traveling to the 2015 ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition in San Francisco. Some require ALA and/or division membership and others are open to a larger audience. The list below is arranged by deadline. Penguin Young Readers Group Award

  • Description: Up to four children’s librarians can receive a stipend to attend their first ALA Annual Conference.
  • Award amount: $600
  • Requirement: Must be ALSC member
  • Administered by: ALSC

Baker & Taylor Conference Grant

  • Description: Two grants for librarians who work with young adults and who have never attended an ALA Annual Conference. One grant is given to a school librarian and one grant is given to a librarian whose focus is public libraries.
  • Award amount: $1,000
  • Requirement: Must be YALSA member

Dorothy Broderick Student Conference Scholarship

  • Description: For a graduate student attending ALA Annual Conference for the first time.
  • Award amount: $1,000
  • Requirement: Must be YALSA member

First Step Award

  • Description: Provides librarians new to the continuing resources field with the opportunity to broaden their perspective and to encourage professional development in ALA Conference and participation in Continuing Resources Section activities.
  • Award amount: $1,500

  • Sponsored by: Wiley Professional Development Grant

Jan Merrill-Oldham Professional Development Grant

  • Description: Provides funds and a citation to a librarian or paraprofessional who has preservation responsibilities, or a person currently enrolled in a preservation-related graduate program.
  • Award amount: $1,250

Demco New Leaders Travel Grant

  • Description: Enhances the professional development of public librarians new to the field by making possible their attendance at major professional development activities. May be used for travel to PLA Institutes or Preconferences at ALA conferences.
  • Award amount: Up to $1,500 per applicant
  • Requirement: Must be PLA member
  • Administered by: PLA

Routledge Distance Learning Librarianship Conference Sponsorship Award

  • Description: Honors a librarian working in the field of, or contributing to the success of distance learning librarianship or related library service in higher education.
  • Award amount: $1,200

Zora Neale Hurston Award

  • Description: Honors an individual who has demonstrated leadership in promoting African-American literature. The winner receives funds to support travel, as well as a plaque, tickets to United for Libraries’ Gala Author Tea, and a set of Hurston’s books.
  • Award amount: $1,250
  • Requirement: Must be ALA member

Business Expert Press Award for Academic Business Librarians

  • Description: Presents funds and a citation to a new librarian in the field of academic business librarianship.
  • Award amount: $1,250

Morningstar Public Librarian Support Award

  • Description: Offers funds and a citation to a public librarian who has performed outstanding business reference service and who requires financial assistance.

Atlas Systems Mentoring Award

  • Description: Offers travel assistance funds and a citation to a library practitioner who is new to the field of interlibrary loan, document delivery, or electronic reserves, and who is involved n the areas of borrowing, lending, document delivery, electronic reserves, material delivery, or resource sharing.
  • Award amount: $1,250

Frances Henne Award

  • Description: Recognizes a school librarian with five years or less experience who demonstrates leadership qualities with students, teachers, and administrators, to attend an AASL conference or ALA Annual Conference for the first time.
