Longtime ALA Leader Margolis Diagnosed with Blood Cancer

March 17, 2010

Members of the ALA governing Council learned yesterday from his wife, Amanda, that longtime councilor and association leader Bernard Margolis has been diagnosed with a severe type of blood cancer. His wife said they were consulting with the famed Dana-Farber/ Harvard Cancer Center in Boston and anticipate that he will need a bone marrow transplant as well as in-hospital chemotherapy.

A friend in Michigan, Jim Luke, has put together a website so we all can stay in touch," Amanda said. "This is an opportunity to use the world's new technology in a wonderful application. You can find out how Bernie's doing and keep up to date by visiting. You can also comment, and express your love and support on the site. Bernie says you can argue with him if you are so disposed! See the 'Tell Bernie' page/tab on the website." Margolis is well known within ALA as a man who loves a good debate.

His wife went on to say that "Bernie has been excited in his position as Assistant Commissioner for Libraries and State Librarian of New York since January of 2009. We have been busy remodeling and settling into a home just outside of Albany, New York. While we have been in shock with the latest health news we are buoyed by the great support of our family and friends."
