Library Giant Russell Shank Dies

Russell Shank, 86, professor emeritus at the University of California, Los Angeles’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, 1977–1988 university librarian at UCLA, and a renowned leader who made his mark in academic, special, and public librarianship as well as in intellectual freedom and international librarianship, died June 26 of complications from a fall.

Anne Enright, Robert K. Massie, first recipients of the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction

<p> Anaheim, Calif. &ndash; The American Library Association (ALA) is proud to announce the first recipients of the Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction, funded through a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York. Anne Enright&rsquo;s &quot;The Forgotten Waltz&quot; received the medal for fiction and Robert K. Massie&rsquo;s &quot;Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman&quot; received the nonfiction prize. The medals recognize the best fiction and nonfiction books for adult readers published the previous year in the United States. The selections were unveiled during the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif.&nbsp;</p>

E-books, school library resolution, privacy, book awards among highlights of ALA Annual Conference

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference, held June 21-26 in Anaheim, Calif, saw a unanimous resolution in support of  the value of school libraries passed by ALA Council, as well as discussions about e-books, privacy, library advocacy and other important issues.

Council III Session in Anaheim Ends Early

Council III zipped through a short agenda today, meeting for just a half hour.

Memorial resolutions were read for Ray Bradbury, Kathleen Hegarty, Sara Fine, James Clifton Welbourne, Wanda L. Crenshaw, Jane Howell, Alexander Boyd, and Richard E. Bopp. A tribute to Abbé Charles-Michel L’Épée, inventor of sign language for the deaf, was also read.
