After the excitement of the Youth Media Awards, Midwinter started to wrap up. But while many attendees began preparing to make their way home, plenty of events tempted them on what, for many, was their final day in Seattle. Notable among them were the Martin Luther King, Jr.

ALA Council I: Rethinking ALA

The ALA Council breezed through approval of 2012 ALA Annual Conference Council minutes, among other actions at its first session of Midwinter in Seattle today. 

ALA announces slate of Council candidates

CHICAGO — The American Library Association (ALA) announces the following individuals as candidates for positions on the ALA Council.  These individuals were nominated by the Nominating Committee for the 2013 ALA Election:

Craig Scott Amos, library manager, Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton, Va.

ALA Council resolution opposes voter restrictions

ANAHEIM, Calif. – The American Library Association (ALA) Council has passed a resolution opposing voter restrictions.

The resolution, passed at the ALA Annual Conference, held June 21-26 in Anaheim, Calif., opposes voter ID laws, restrictions on voter registration, cuts to early voting and any other laws resulting in the restriction of lawful access to voting.

ALA Council resolution proclaims value of school libraries, librarians

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The American Library Association (ALA) Council has passed a resolution in support of school libraries.

The resolution, passed at the ALA Annual Conference, held June 21-26 in Anaheim, Calif., directs the ALA to lead the association in “addressing the urgent need for advocacy on behalf of school libraries and librarians.”

ALA councilors elected

CHICAGO — Thirty-three members have been elected as councilors-at-large on the Council of the American Library Association (ALA) for three-year terms. The terms begin at the conclusion of the 2012 ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif. and extend through the end of the 2015 ALA Annual Conference in San Francisco.

The 2012 - 2015 Councilors-at-Large are:

ALA resolution on publishers and practices that discriminate against library users

DALLAS - In a resolution adopted by the Council of the American Library Association (ALA), it has been resolved that the ALA:

1. Opposes any discriminatory policies of publishers and distributors which adversely impact access to content by library users. 

ALA Council supports Out of School library programs

NEW ORLEANS – The Council of the American Library Association (ALA) passed a resolution encouraging ALA members to tell their legislators, as well as local and national organizations and associations about the value to their library of Out of School library programs.
