eReader prices continue to plummet, part 2

Looks like my prediction from Computer’s in Libraries 2010 that eReaders are about to become a commodity item and prices will race to the bottom is safely on it’s way to becoming true. Border’s announced that they will be selling the Aluratek Libre eReader for $120 today, beating the previous low for an eInk eReader by more than $10. I predicted that we’d see $99 before the holiday season…I think that’s definitely going to happen.

While the Libre isn’t the best eReader, these devices are moving more and more into the sweet spot for library use….when these are $50, will your library bother buying the “classics” for circulation, or just buy these en masse and load them up with eBooks?

eReader Prices Continue to Plummet

The eReader market is already crowded, but now it looks like we’re in a fast, fast race to the bottom. A company called Paradigm Shift is now advertising a $130 eReader device, breaking the previous low set by the $150 Kobo eReader.

Alex eReader

Here’s a 10 minute preview of the Alex eReader, a dual-screen color and eInk reader coming soon from Borders. It’s my favorite of the 30 or so I had a chance eReaders that I had a chance to see at CES2010. Lots of neat features…take a look. It’s a long video, but worth it.
