Learn to reach your library audience through Facebook in new David Lee King workshop

CHICAGO - ALA TechSource announces a new workshop featuring David Lee King on how to use Facebook for library services and user engagement. This workshop will show librarians how to use the popular social networking site to help their libraries.

Major Facebook announcement

Facebook announced two interesting new features today during a press conference: Groups and Downloads for your information. Groups are a type of self-organized private discussion, allowing you to quickly tag and gather friends separately from your larger friends lists. The most exciting news, for me at least, is that Facebook is going to implement a single-button download service, which will zip up all of your information: pictures, posts, etc…and allow you to download a file of them. That’s great news, and the first crack in the walled garden that gives people hope of being able to get all of their content if they wish to move to another service.

There's More to "Like" as AL Delves into Facebook

AL and Facebook logos

A couple weeks ago I was experimenting with FBML AL site (that’s how we get those “Like” buttons on the blog posts, for example) and at the same time experimenting with Dlvr.it to push out content. Well, one thing led to another, and now we have a Facebook Page.

Facebook enters the Reference business

Facebook is exploring entering the online Question & Answer space in the vein of an AskMetafilter, Mahalo or Answers.com with a new beta product that you can apply to join. AskMefi is a long-standing librarian online favorite…will Facebook be the next quick-reference product?

Importance of Place

Several major web players are making an attempt at being your physical-to-virtual guide to the world. Foursquare is only one player in this, as both Google and Facebook have now launched physical advertising at individual locations in an attempt to capture location information about users. First Google sent QR code stickers to enhance their Places pages, and now Facebook has sent out window-stickers with SMS instructions on them.

There is significant value in location these days…are you listing your library or branches using these services? Why or why not?
