The $3.1-million renovation of the John Peace Library at the University of Texas at San Antonio softened the original concrete architecture with a wave concept, displayed through perforated metal ceiling panels, serpentine seating layouts, accent carpet, and colorful furniture upholstery.

Townsend (Mass.) Public Library

Townsend (Mass.) Public Library is designed in Richardsonian Gothic style, with a central barrel-vaulted reading room that reflects the large entry arch, lit by clerestory windows and articulated by wooden ribs that lead patrons into the space.

San Diego Public Library

These projects execute their particular design concepts with style and panache.

San Diego Public Library’s Logan Heights branch incorporates themes from the indigenous cultures of the Americas. Glasswork in the main entry lobby is in the profile of the colossal Toltec statues at Tula; the “Centro Cultural” (a suspended granite cube, 35 feet on a side, that houses student art displays and programs) is clad in a checkerboard pattern of granite reminiscent of stone construction of the Incas, Aztecs, or Anasazi; and some shelves feature end panels with Mayan decor.

The school PTA funded touches of garden-themed decor when the library at Orrington Elementary School in Evanston, Illinois, moved to a new space created by tearing down a wall between two classrooms.

Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center

5,200 square feet of space at the Ische Library at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans were renovated into a 24/7 Library Commons. Custom-routed screens, in the form of abstracted medical imagery like fat cells, neurons, or heart muscle, define spaces in the Commons without isolating them.

Houston Public Library, Morris Frank Branch

These projects execute their particular design concepts with style and panache.

Houston Public Library’s new Morris Frank Library is a $2.31 million, 10,409-square-foot branch designed with a futuristic theme. Morris Frank is the third of four HPL Express libraries, which focus on offering services electronically to help bridge the digital divide and which can be opened and operated for less than the cost of a traditional library.

Custom furniture reflects the curvilinear shapes of Greenwich (Conn.) Library’s Byram Shubert branch, and helps to define individual spaces within the library.
