Historic Style: Houston Public Library, Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research
Many people want nothing more than the comfort and quiet dignity of a traditional style when they go to the library. These projects, many of them historic restorations, offer just that.
Houston Public Library’s Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research is located in the 1917 home lived in by Houston businessman and statesman William Lockhart Clayton until his death in 1966. The $7 million renovation of three buildings on the property included new brickwork; painting; the stabilization of a foundation that had sunk six inches in one area; new millwork; and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing system upgrades. The home is listed as a Texas Historical Landmark, and all renovations adhered to City of Houston and Texas Historical Commission requirements.
