Charlene Davis, 61, director of field services and state library service divisions at the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, died June 4. Having worked at KDLA since 1976, Davis was an early champion for technology at public libraries and worked with the state government to provide broadband access at every public library in the state. She was also a founder of the Kentucky Virtual Library, project director for the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program grant that expanded public computing centers in 46 public libraries in Kentucky, and involved in the first Gates Foundation grants that helped 116 Kentucky library systems upgrade computers.
