Build Your Green Book

Does your library have a green book? Similar to a professional portfolio, a green book can become a valuable resource for you to draw upon in your quest to green your library. Ideally, its entire contents should be kept on your computer for easy access.

Use it as a place to keep everything and anything that may have value as you green your library, including:

  • Ideas, articles, research and statistics that you found interesting, inspiring and/or pertinent as you green your library.
  • Examples of initiatives and programs that other libraries have in place that you may want to consider for your library.
  • Reviews for books and movies on environmental topics.
  • A list of green periodicals, web sites and organizations that offer credible information and resources.
  • Published interviews with green notables.
  • Key contacts in your community which may one day play a role in your efforts: The organic-friendly restaurant down the street, members of the local media noted as being environmentally conscious, non-profit groups in your area which host an Earth Day event every year, green speakers, and so on.
  • A list of local places where your patrons can recycle items year round.
  • A vendor list for environmental items that may become a part of your promotional plan, including mugs, bags and more.

Add material to the book regularly and invite fellow staff members to do the same. Keep it organized for fast and easy reference.

And don’t forget to add initiatives that you’ve executed at your library to the book, no matter how small they may seem. They all add up. One or two here, one or two there…

Online options?

For the ultimate in "green", as well as usability and shareability, shouldn’t this be online? How would you go about building such a resource so that it can be shared/searched/updated?

Online Options?

Touche, Jason!

Thanks for adding this important consideration to my "greening your library" blog post!

See future posts about building such an online resource so that it can be shared/searched/updated.

I look forward to reading your future replies/responses to my posts.  Your input is much appreciated and invaluable!
