Penguin Delights and Educates Children at Kentucky Library

Speckles the African penguin visits children at the Kenton County (Ky.) Public Library's William E. Durr branch in Independence. Speckles spends most of her time at Newport (Ky.) Aquarium, but she was brought to the library the morning of March 5 thanks to the WAVE Foundation, a conservation organization based in Kentucky. WAVE partnered with Newport Aquarium to hold a viewing and learning session with the Homeschool Club group at the library. Homeschool Club’s 40 children learned about the diet, natural environment, and survival instincts of the African penguin, as well as the animal's status as an endangered species. Children’s programmer Jenny Schwartz began the program by reading a book about African penguins called Pierre the Penguin (Sleeping Bear Press, 2010). The kids had a chance to introduce themselves to Speckles and pet her after the presentation.
