If you are not already a member of your state library association, also known as an ALA Chapter, please do join yours. There’s lots of reasons to do so, including discounts for attending conferences, networking, mentoring, and all kinds of other opportunities and services! And, most importantly, you can contribute to your state association’s efforts to support libraries and the library profession.

To learn more about your state association, visit yours on ALA’s state and regional chapters page.

If you decide to join your state association, see if yours is one of the 18 Chapters participating in the ALA joint student membership program. This program allows you to join your participating Chapter and ALA for one low price of $35, from now through August 31, 2012. To apply for joint membership, please find your appropriate application (PDF) and print it out. Applications may be mailed (address is on form) or faxed to (312) 280-4392. At this time it is not possible to apply online for joint membership.

While you’re joining the associations that will help you in your chosen field, remember to join your Student Chapter!

The American Library Association has affiliate relationships with state library associations (Chapters) in all fifty States, the District of Columbia, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and regional library associations in the Mountain Plains, New England, Pacific Northwest, and Southeastern regions. Chapters promote general library service and librarianship within its geographic area, provide geographic representation to the Council of the American Library Association, and cooperate in the promotion of general and joint enterprises with the American Library Association and other library groups.

Couldn't agree more!

Don,

Thank you for sharing these great and truthful reasons for joining your state library association. There are so many members of ALA who do not join their state associations for whatever reasons. But for just $35 for librarians and $12 for staff, joining is a fantastic value in Georgia. I benefit so much for knowing folks from all types of libraries all over our state. And the more members we have, the more effective we are at communicating and garnering support for our state’s libraries.  There’s no better way to carry out the mission ALA and its Divisions than at the local level and vice versa. If a state needs support then it is great to know ALA and Chapter Relations is there for us.

Thanks, Carol!

Thanks for taking the time for such kind words, and for further explaining to everyone why joining ALA and their state library association is so very important!
