June 6, 2014

Seven-time Grammy winner and Billboard Artist of the Year Taylor Swift can now add ALA Celebrity READ Poster to her list of accomplishments. An avid reader and strong supporter of literacy and libraries, the 24-year-old partnered with Scholastic Books to make book donations to libraries in her hometown of Reading, Pennsylvania, and Nashville, Tennessee, where she currently lives.

She will star opposite Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, and Alexander Skarsgård in the film adaptation of Lois Lowry’s 1994 Newbery Medal–winning young adult novel, The Giver, in theaters August 15. Lowry and Bridges, the film’s director and AL’s June Newsmaker, will present at Barbara Stripling’s President’s Program at the 2014 ALA Annual Conference and Exhibition in Las Vegas

Walden Media, which is presenting the film in collaboration with the Weinstein Company, is providing educational materials based on The Giver and also sponsoring a sweepstakes for educators and librarians, with a grand prize that includes a trip for two to the film’s premiere in New York City.
